Advancing Accessibility in Engineering Education

Provider(s):
University of Washington and Eastern Washington University

Description:
Accessibility for students with learning challenges is a growing area in Engineering Education. We are interested in understanding the major obstacles faced by students and discussing existing technologies to address them. Further, we are interested in discussing potential new technologies that could help students who need enhanced levels of accessibility & support in Engineering-centric Education. This summer, we will begin discussing these issues with a couple of colleagues and are looking for a volunteer to perform background research and provide summaries to us in the form of a technical report. In the initial phase, this work will be performed in the context of a course in quantum mechanics for engineers and material scientists and the accompanying textbook. The student will also explore how emerging technologies in AI can provide methods that make engineering education more equitable to students requiring enhanced levels of accessibility. This internship is special in that it requires an independent student with good writing skills and an extremely strong interest in developing skills that are beyond math/physics/programming/ML. Please see our other summer internship summaries if you are interested in a more conventional internship.

The student should have access to a major library facility if remote. In general, students are able to access the libraries of many public universities in-person.
